We’ve been blessed with some intense guests with mad missions. Among them have been:

  • March 11, 2007 *Sultan Muhammad, grandson of the founder of the Nation of Islam Elijah Muhammad. He is also CAIR–Chicago’s former Communications Coordinator AND Minister Marcus, a member of the Nation of Islam and Mosque Maryam in Chicago. We discuss the legacy of the Nation of Islam and Minister Louis Farrakhan. Their contribution to the American Muslim Landscape.
  • April 8, 2007 *Mr. Paul Wack and Ms. Elizabeth Shulman, teachers at Niles Township High Schools speak with us about the Peace Studies movement and the relation between activism and peace. Also, a discussion on female Muslim scholarship with Chicago organizer, Tahera Ahmad, of the Islamic Institute of Education.
  • May 13, 2007 *Fadi Rafati, Shariq Shafi, and Elizabeth Al-Dajani of The Petra Law Group. A discussion on how the firm synchronizes both Sharia and American law to better serve the Muslim community. Also, a discussion with Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar of Kazi Publications about her new, English-only translation of the Holy Qur’an.
  • June 10, 2007 * Widad Al Bassam of Chicago Arabesque. The first-ever Arab festival in Chicago. Then Frances Laidlaw, a volunteer for the Chicago Architecture Foundation who has developed two bus tours this summer that focus on Islamic-Style Architecture in Chicago. Finally, Suad Abdul Khabeer of IMAN’s biannual Takin’ It To The Streets community festival. *All programs free and open to the public.
  • July 8, 2007 * Hilmi Okur & Halim Calis of the University of Chicago discuss the philosophy and teachings of Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen.
  • September 9, 2007 *Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar, translater of “The Sublime Quran” returns to Azan with Dr. Souleymane Bachir Diagne, professor of Philosophy and African Studies at Northwestern University, and Dr. Layla Kassem, research scientist in clinical and genetic psychology/ psychiatry. We discuss conversion, sacred texts, and spiritual advocacy in Islam.
  • October 14, 2007 *Hibba Abbasi and Dr. Altaf Khaisuruddin discuss health

and Muslim women’s fitness with Hinan Hannah, yoga practitioner and recent car crash survivor, sharing her story.

  • Rafi Peterson, Board member of IMAN discusses Inner-City Muslim Action Network’s transitional housing program, recidivism, and youth at risk.

Azan Junior Host, Juwairya Ali joins the conversation.
